FEATURED HALL OF FAME

Capricorn Caves

Capricorn Caves, located 23 kms north of Rockhampton, are privately owned limestone caves on 85 acres of freehold land.

The property is an important environment site with its rare tropical karst, remnant dry rainforest with 274 species including the rare fern Tectaria devexa. Native fauna include 5 species of bats roosting in the caves, including the vulnerable ghost bat.

Visitor options range from easily accessible guided tours through caves; an adventurous cave exploration; self guided bush walks, and a Visitor Interpretation Centre with its Bat Cave that supports a successful environmental education program.

Management aims to preserve this biodiversity with revegetation programs, and develop management of water resources and recycling of waste materials to achieve a total property management that is ecologically sustainable. Visitors will not only enjoy an authentic Australian experience but gain an awareness and understanding of the landcare ethic. An accredited caravan camping area nestled in the bush is now open. An eco-adventure lodge offering budget accommodation and educational activities opened in April 2002.
