Mungalla Aboriginal Tours

Mungalla Aboriginal Tours shares the land’s history from its pre-contact days as traditional lands of the Nywaigi people through to the recent return of the land to the traditional owners. Throughout the tour physical sites on the property are incorporated into the telling of stories relating to the property’s mixed Aboriginal, South Sea Islander and European heritage. The tour provides a contemporary insight into indigenous culture through powerful, tragic, but ultimately uplifting stories of indigenous culture.

Sustainability Commitment

At Mungalla Aboriginal Tours, our sustainability commitment is at the heart of our operations. We prioritize sustainable practices that honour Nywaigi Elders & both the environment and our rich cultural heritage. Our tours are designed to minimize environmental impact while educating visitors about the importance of conservation. We actively participate in climate change action by showing our visitors our multi award winning projects around restoring & preserving our extensive wetlands, which serve as vital ecosystems for the Great Barrier Reef & for diverse bird species. Our commitment extends to the community, where we support local initiatives and promote cultural awareness and understanding. Through our Captive Lives exhibition and other cultural programs, we ensure that the stories and traditions of the Nywaigi people are preserved and celebrated for future generations. At Mungalla, we strive to create a harmonious balance between cultural responsibility, environmental stewardship, and community engagement.

Mungalla Aboriginal Tours

The history and culture of Mungalla tour begins at the grand Mungalla Station homestead where we introduce you to Nywaigi Aboriginal culture. Here you can examine artefact’s and try your hand at throwing a boomerang.

We then board the bus for a short trip to the original homestead site where we introduce you to James Cassady who was the first European settler on Mungalla in 1882. As you view the remnants of the old Mungalla homestead you will hear the pioneering stories of these first white settlers and view old photos of this historic site. Let your thoughts drift back in time and imagine how it was in its glory days of formal gardens, tennis courts and thoroughbred horses. Here you will also visit the grave of James Cassady and his son Frank.

We also explain the often brutal confrontation between European settlers and Nywaigi Aboriginal people and the role the Cassady family played in protecting our people.

We again board the bus to return to the homestead to experience the amazing Captive Lives exhibition. Two groups of indigenous people from this area were taken to America and Europe in the 1880s and 1890s to be exhibited at the Chicago World Fair, circuses and curiosity shows.
