Wild Cave Tours

Wild Cave Tours provides genuine speleological and cultural experiences to the tourism market as well as charters for education groups and private tourism groups. The business operation features leadership by recognised leaders of the Mole Creek Caving Club, a corporate member of the Australian Speleological Federation. The business owner, Deborah Hunter, is also the principal leader.
Product design and delivery features flexibility in interpretive and adventure content as well as location or cave venue/s, to suit participants and current environmental or seasonal conditions. The caves are all undeveloped (wild) caves of the Mole Creek Karst National Park and the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. The caves are richly decorated in mineral formations and seasonally have active streams running through them. The ecological and hydrological integrity of the caves of the Mole Creek karst landscape are well known to Australian cavers and speleologists. Some individual caves are famous internationally.
Environmental and cultural interpretation, as well as instruction in minimal impact caving techniques, feature prominently. The relict Gondwanan fauna that features in Tasmanian karst caves is conspicuous for our observation. Photography is encouraged and assisted. Most trips include a practical contribution to a conservation or restoration task in or about the caves.
The setting is an Aboriginal cultural landscape of several thousand years, its pastures having been maintained by the Pallatorre people. Cultural practices were documented by George Augustus Robinson, colonial Protector of Aborigines. Today, Aboriginal people are involved in contemporary landscape rehabilitation following unprecedented fires and floods of 2011 and 2016.

Sustainability Commitment

World Heritage caves, landscape and our sustainability. By achieving Ecotourism Australia Certification status, Wild Cave Tours joins fellow exemplary operators in terms of sustainability and provision of authentic, high-quality nature-based tourism experiences. The ECO Certification logo means that you are guaranteed to be part of a genuine and authentic nature experience that looks after the environment. The ECO Certification program assures you that certified products are backed by a commitment to sustainable practices and provide high quality nature-based tourism experiences. Wild Cave Tours’ owner-operator, Deb Hunter, is a caver who runs day-trip adventures for visitors in Honeycomb Cave, our most important and extensive recreational cave. However we also have authorised access to caves of the nearby Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area (TWWHA), which is the main focus for the Tours. Deb has a long history of working to document values of the caves and landscape of this secluded area of the Mole Creek karst. Deb works beside the Aboriginal custodians to protect the cultural landscape she works in and to engage the next generation in caring for country. The area is of outstanding Aboriginal significance and natural values. These values are explained as we traverse Country to visit the caves (scroll this page to read details of these values). An Aboriginal elder may be booked for groups interested in hearing first hand of the ancient cultural values. Please ask. Coming on a Wild Cave Tour supports Deb’s other (volunteer) work as a custodian or steward of this place.
